I took a wrong turn but I know the way every day is coming down the wire things are catching fire you're so real, you don't have to feel hey, no big deal, oh la la la (Josephine) you're not there (come here) you don't even care (lighter than air) fingers in my ears, oh la la la took a wrong turn but I know the way like a lonely bird making his way through the rain every day is coming down the wire you know that things are catching fire it's so real, I don't even know hey, no big deal, oh la la la (Josephine) I'm not there (come here) all alone and scared (sun in my hair) fingers in my ears, oh la la la but you never know...

Maggie and Lucy and Lucy and Maggie did you ever see a coin, I mean a Penny that could flip itself? heads or tails (twinkle the keys just like a player piano) an eye for eye an ear for an ear I'm going away but I'll always be here and I know that but it's so hard to show that Lucy and Maggie and Maggie and Lucy did you ever watch Jelly on the tele? climb your family tree what do you see? (you're no only child, b/c we're all only children) day after day year after year I'm going away but I wish you were here but I know that I'm just waiting to show that in the light of the moon moonbathing we're moonbathing baby baby Grady and Clovis and Clovis and Grady ran away from home when they were 20 back in '56 planted a tree for you and me (it's called hallelujah) time after time these minutes of mine are washing away but I'll always be here and I know that I'm just waiting to show that in the light of the moon

Human Hearts 04:02
I wanna put the band back together for human hearts write fairy tales for free so dust off all your denim and your leather like Andy said the birds will fall from trees Tommy worked at Harry's helicopters fixing choppers for the man in borrowed boots we slid down stairs bled icy hoots of never caring laughter so brush your pretty hair (cause you'll lose it don't you know) and make your little bed (for your girlfriend Judy Rose) you'll never be alone (if you're always on the road) I wanna put the band back together (always on the road) press some discs and 45s and pins (please please come on home) so dust off all your denim and your leather (always on the road) and go on singing naughty through the wind the broken rings collected there such smoky things we breathed out every night the river rose while we came down with bloody noses running on her gown so brush your pretty hair (cause you'll lose it don't you know) and make your little bed (for your girlfriend Judy Rose) you'll never be alone if you're always on the road let's try to put the band back together (always on the road) for human hearts write fairy tales for free (please please come on home) we'll pick a fight and argue about whether (always on the road) Andy said we'd be forever free

about

I Can Feel the Night Around Me, the third album from Philadelphia's Nightlands, showcases Dave Hartley's finely tuned ability to layer his voice and conjure some of the most beautiful and elaborate virtual choirs in modern music. If his first two records were vocal layering experiments, his third stands as Hartley's thesis statement: "I was determined to use vocal stacking to enable my songwriting, not shroud or obscure it."

He recorded most of the album alone in a cold warehouse basement, which he affectionately calls The Space -- it's where The War on Drugs (of whom Hartley has been a core member for the past decade) formerly rehearsed and stored their equipment. "The dissonance between the sound of the album and the atmosphere in which it was recorded is pretty striking," Hartley says. Indeed the music seems more geographically inspired by the microclimates of the Lost Coast and the moonrises of Big Sur than the post-industrial cityscape of North Philadelphia. Perhaps his periodic westward sojourns and healthy obsessions with mid-career Beach Boys albums and Denis Johnson's Already Dead: A California Gothic were influencing him more than he was aware.
